Pump Intake Debris Screen Optimization

A refinery client uses seawater as a main supply for plant cooling operations as well as fire water for emergency situations. Depending upon storm activity and currents, significant seaweed and floating debris has been witnessed entering the intake structure. Systems and procedures in place for removing debris and preventing debris entrance into the pump intake were maintenance intensive and required considerable manual effort. The client wished to modify the screening mechanism to improve safety, reliability and maintenance costs.


Multiple options were considered and a feasibility report was compiled to assist with the selection of the best solution for addressing all of the clients' needs. Options incorporated both passive and mechanical screening and ranged in complexity from minor modifications to the existing screens to installation of a new automated system. Design selection criteria included a calculation of estimated screening effectiveness, an assessment of anticipated installation and maintenance efforts, design safety and cost. The client utilized the data in the feasibility study for internal planning and future project budgeting.
