February 2012 Project:

Vibration Monitoring of Fleet of Platforms
Vibration Monitoring of Fleet of Platforms
Challenge:

There is an aging fleet of platforms in the Cook Inlet. It is difficult to perform sub-sea inspections due to the site environmental conditions. As an alternative to sub-sea inspections, vibration monitoring can be used to determine structural damage. Through vibration monitoring, the platforms natural frequencies are established and compared against previously established values. A shift in natural frequencies can be indicative of potential structural damage.

Resolution:

Using ideal ice conditions and vibration monitoring instrumentation, our team collected data to determine the natural frequency of various platform structures. Natural frequencies for both North-South and East-West directions were determined, compared against previously measured values, and documented to be used for comparison purposes in future inspections.
