February 2013 Project:

Platform Crane Replacement Engineering
Platform Crane Replacement Engineering
Challenge:

Two new cranes are being installed on a platform in Cook Inlet. The purpose of the new cranes is to increase the maximum load that can be hoisted up to and around the deck area. The platform, constructed in the 1960s, needs to be evaluated for the larger loads imparted by the new cranes. All required structural design upgrades are also in the scope. The analysis must take into account the numerous possible loading and boom extension conditions of the cranes as well as all pertinent existing loads on the various decks.

Resolution:

Our engineering team created two partial models of the platform (one for each crane) in a structural analysis program and analyzed the local deck structure and crane support elements. Each potentially governing loading scenario was considered. Our team determined that strengthening of certain members was required, so recommended modifications were drawn and submitted to the client.
