October 2011 Project:

Platform Removal
Platform Removal
Challenge:

Hopper Engineering is providing technical support for the removal of an offshore oil platform in Alaska. A new crane of larger capacity is required to handle the heavier equipment necessary for the platform removal process. The new crane pedestal sits directly on the platform's lower deck and extends 40 feet high across two levels of the platform. The challenge is to analyze the existing platform for the new 8 feet diameter crane support and make necessary modifications.

Resolution:

Our engineering team analyzed 154 different load cases in a preliminary study using a simplified computer model. Subsequently, a detailed finite element model was created to analyze the platform with the new pedestal, using worst-case scenario loadings at various boom angles and directions. Numerous types of reinforcements were required, such as angles, doubler plates, and annular rings to reinforce overstressed structural members.
